Fowler barrel racer finding success

Stephani Rowe/Action Photography Jennifer Conway competes in the Super Tour event in Chickasha, Okla.
Fowler barrel racer, Jennifer Conway, is a familiar face at races across the Midwest and winning a buckle is nothing new to her. But she was shocked when she heard her name announced at a recent event.

D & G Barrel Production hosts a series of Super Tour barrel racing competitions across Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas sponsored by Classic Equine, a major manufacturer of equine products.

The first race of their 2006 Super Tour took place the first weekend of February in Chickasha, Okla. The race was an Open 4D format, and out of 224 barrel racers only 4 took home a buckle, a first place check for their division and the title of a Super Tour Champion.

An excited Conway exclaimed, "I ran 107th Friday night with a time of 17.348. ‘Gator’ really didn’t run his best and I was just hoping to pick up a check. Instead, I nearly passed out when they announced my name as the Open 4D Champion and called me to the arena for the awards presentation. I was so shocked."

Conway said she has only been competing on her current barrel racing mount, Hesa Top Robin a.k.a. Gator Bug, since August 2005. As with all her horses, she trained him herself and this was his first major competition.

"Competitions of this size put a lot of pressure on young horses and if you have one that can handle that kind of pressure with little experience, you are pretty lucky. He stood strong against some of the nation’s top competitors.”
